Dear Sir:

 

We are aware of the importance of what we are about to say. We understand that a statement of this nature usually comes from a fraud, a mentally disturbed person with delusional ideas, or even a publicity-seeking reporter or agent of some political, esoteric or religious organization seeking to exploit his version or the news for the benefit of his group.

 

When a hypothesis or an account departs from plausibility, and when technical means and evidence to check its reality are lacking, every balanced intelligence has the right, and the duty, to adopt an attitude of scepticism or distrust. One must never accept a mere account, and still less when, as in this case, its origin is unknown, which arouses strong suspicion of some fraud.

 

For us it is evident that what we are going to reveal to you is true. However, we certainly cannot demand that you accept such fantastic information. We admit that if we were in your place we would react in a similar way.

 

Nevertheless, the attitude of one who tolerates any version a priori is admissible if he then analyses it dispassionately and objectively in search of the truth. In fact, all the researchers of the planet EARTH have followed this criterion. If concepts that yesterday seemed fantastic and absurd had not been analysed by competent specialists, would you have reached your present cultural state?

 

In recent years, on the occasion of the appearance of UFOs in the earth's atmosphere, man's imagination has run riot and there have been many fraudulent reports in the press, whereas only on rare occasions have authentic accounts of these phenomena been published.

 

Aware of the logical climate of distrust that these versions have created, we know that our declaration will be received with extreme reserve. However, our aim in sending you this letter, typed by one of our collaborators, is not to be believed with no more proof than these few lines.

 

In fact, similar communications were sent some time ago to professors and specialists in various countries. In Canada, Australia, Spain and Yugoslavia there are groups of educated people who know of our existence, although at our suggestion they keep a discreet silence on the subject. And although we must acknowledge that numerous men of science with whom we established contact in writing or by telephone indignantly threw away the letters we addressed to them, logically believing them to be students' pranks or the work of paranoiacs, in some cases the scientific elements we provided ended up convincing them that our stance could be serious and devoid of immoral intentions.

 

For this reason we beg you to read our declaration carefully. It matters little if at first you dismiss the truth or reality of our statements. Moreover, we do not wish for the time being that our existence should become known to the social masses without sufficient preparation.

 

In short: the situation is awkward and strange. If we are faithful to the truth, we must convey our own testimony to you. You, as a balanced and objective man, are free to accept it or reject it. In any case, we ask you on no account to throw away this copy. One day you will be able to ascertain the truthfulness of our statements.

 

At 4 hours 17 minutes GMT on the earth day of 28 March 1950, an OAWOLEA UEWA (lenticular spacecraft) made contact with the earth's lithosphere for the first time in our history. The landing took place in the surroundings of “LA JAVIE” in the BASSES ALPES in France.

 

The process of adaptation, which included assimilating the language, information on the social customs etc. of the beings of this planet, is difficult to summarize in a mere letter. Some of your brothers in Canada and Spain know the whole story in detail.

 

Six of my brothers landed on that occasion as the first explorers of a world unknown to us. Later we came in greater numbers to study and analyse terrestrial culture. Two bases of operation have been established so far: ADELAIDE (Australia), where our brother the head of the expedition resides, and WEST BERLIN (Germany).

                                                                                                                                                                              

We come from a solidified star whose geological characteristics differ a little from those of Earth, but whose atmosphere is very similar. (We use terrestrial units of measurement in some cases).

We designate our planet with a phoneme that you could transcribe thus: UMMO. A single continent and the small island surface occupy only 38 % of the surface of our planet. Ummo moves in an elliptical trajectory of eccentricity 0,078 around a star we call IUMMA (our SUN). The mean distance UMMO-IUMMA is 9,96. 10¹ cm. Iumma is a star with a mass of 1,48. 10³³ g. The distance separating IUMMA from your sun is about 14.42 light-years. We calculate that you would locate this star at:

 

Right ascension: 12h 31 minutes

Declination: 9º 18’

 

But the brightness you would observe is greatly diminished, since there is a mass of cosmic dust that attenuates it and reduces it to an apparent magnitude of the order of 26. The surface temperature of this star is 4580.3 degrees K. Its magnetic field disturbances are large. On our planet we record values rising to 216 gauss, far higher than those of Earth.

 

These disturbances prevent us from making normal use of electromagnetic frequencies, which is why we must use gravitational waves for communications.

 

We, the inhabitants of Ummo, have a body whose physiological form is very similar to that of the “HOMO SAPIENS” of Earth. This is logical if you consider that the biogenetic laws are valid for the whole Universe and that, when the environment is analogous, the biological structure undergoes few variations. We are, therefore, beings whom you would not describe as “monsters”. Only a few small anatomical differences distinguish us from you. A large proportion of my brothers have hypertrophied phonation organs (buccal cords), and we compensate for this sclerosis with artificial means of verbal expression.

 

We are a people older than yours, which has likewise reached a higher level of civilization. Our social structure is different. We are governed by 4 members who have been chosen by psychophysiological selection. Laws are regulated according to sociometric constants measured over time.

 

Our economic system is also different. We do not know money, since transactions in certain goods of value that exist on Ummo are carried out by a network of what you would call “electronic brains”. Ordinary consumer goods can hardly be valued, since their abundant production far exceeds demand.

 

Our society is deeply religious. We believe in a creator (WOA) or God, and we have scientific arguments in favour of the existence of a factor that you would call “the soul”. We know of a third factor that unites it to the body and that is made up of Krypton atoms located in the encephalic mass.

 

Our customs are also very different. There are no different races, and the zoological species and varieties are less numerous.

 

We do not intend to interfere in the social evolution of your planet, for two transcendent reasons. A cosmic morality forbids any paternalistic attitude towards planetary social networks, which must be formed gradually and by each of them. What is more, besides any public intervention on our part, our own official presentation would produce serious disturbances, incalculable social upheavals, and in this way the study and analysis of your society would not be possible as it is under the present conditions of virginity.

 

Our modest attempts at contact - such as the one we are now making with you - will, on the other hand, cause no great disturbance, for we foresee in advance the natural scepticism of whoever receives this letter.

 

Our numbering system is base 12. As a curiosity, we include a table with some mathematical algorithms as we transcribe them.
